On April 27th in Philadelphia, AT&T competed with 27 other teams in the 33rd running of the Penn Relays Corporate Distance Medley Championship of America. Competitors this year included Raytheon, General Electric, Merck, the Fire
Department of New York, Blue Cross, ExxonMobil, Verizon, The Executive Office of the President, and 18 others.
A Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team consists of four runners covering distances of 1200m, 400m, 800m, and 1600m respectively. AT&T's team included Michael Buchanan from Finance, Sheila Meyers from Financial Systems, Bob Peters from
Technology Development, and Ken Walsh from Security Platforms. Lou Putnam joined the team in Philadelphia. Lou leads the AT&T Running and Fitness team that encourages involvement of as many employees and retirees as possible to
participate in running events to promote a healthy and fit lifestyle.
The Corporate DMR is an exciting event because all 27 teams compete in a single heat. Michael took responsibility for running the opening 1200 leg and navigating through the traffic of all the other teams. Sheila ran the 400 leg
and finished in a strong sprint to hand off to Bob. Bob ran the 800; Ken ran the 1600 to complete the relay for AT&T in a time of 13:58. AT&T still holds the Penn Relay’s Corporate DMR fastest time of 10:32 set in 1990.
The next big event for AT&T's Running and Fitness Club will be the Corporate Relays that include relays on the track, field events, and 5K and 10K road races. The Corporate Relays will be held in Golden, CO from July-14-15.
