AT&T won the Mid-Atlantic Corporate Relays this year, defeating Booz Allen by a score of 712 to 548.
The meet, held in the Washington, D.C. area, consisted of most of our usual track and field events, but did not include the road races. We put in a powerful performance, winning 14 out of 17 team events our team entered, including two compiled events (Team Jump, Team Throw).
We had 13 team members from California, Chicago, Kansas City, Washington State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nebraska, and the Washington, DC area. During the two-day meet held in hot and humid weather, Holly Barilla, Breeanne Martin and Marcus Thurman completed five events. Many other team members completed four events.
We turned in another dominant sprint performance with gold medal performances (by WMA score) in the 200M and 400M events, as well as the 4x100M, 4x200M, 4x400M, Submaster’s Sprint, Women’s Relay and Senior’s Relays. Our sprint team consisted of Breeanne Martin, Holly Barilla, Alfonso Peterson, Marcus Thurman, Tony Pacheco, Joe Hehn, Jacklyn Slaughter and Brendan Putnam.
Our middle distance team, consisting of Holly Barilla, Phil Gibbons, Tony Pacheco, Ken Gibbons, and Linda Hanson won the team mile and 3000m as well as helping secure wins in the Women’s Relay, Senior Relay and Submaster’s Sprint.
Probably the most exciting race was the Submaster’s Sprint on Sunday afternoon. Holly Barilla had a strong lead-off 200m, followed by a gutsy 200m by Tony Pacheco who strained his hamstring in the home stretch and limped in to hand-off to Marcus Thurman who built a good cushion for Phil Gibbons, who held off a furious charge with a kick of his own to win by only 0.1 seconds.
Our throwing team, consisting of Joe Johns, Breeanne Martin and Tony Thurman, won the Shot Put, Discus, Team Throw and finished second in the Thrower’s Relay. Our jumping team won the Team Jump, with Breeanne Martin and Holly Barilla winning the Long Jump, while Marcus Thurman and Tony Thurman posted a huge 1579 point score to win the High Jump, with Marcus only first learning to High Jump during the warmups.
This meet and our strong performance wouldn’t have been possible without a lot of work behind the scenes by a number of people. I am thankful that Gordon Smith from the Booz Allen team coordinated the meet and worked the local logistics to secure the venue. I’d like to thank Linda Hanson for organizing the team dinner that was well attended and enjoyed by all.
As usual, Ken Gibbons did a phenomenal job of scheduling the team in their events and managing the meet. He dealt with multiple changes in personnel with athletes who had to cancel and with some last-minute injuries to team members. I’d also like to thank Joe Hehn for again helping Ken manage the meet as well as with timing and competing. A significant amount of our success over the years can be attributed to Ken’s artful crafting of our line-ups to maximize our team points.
The other highlight of the weekend was our team coming together at the team dinner to honor Lou for the impact he has had on so many of our lives, on this, his 80th birthday. Many of you sent in your well wishes which were presented to Lou, and some of us had a chance to speak at dinner and thank him in person. The tribute was capped off with a birthday cookie complete with candle and a thunderous rendition of Happy Birthday!
This was another wonderful weekend of competition and camaraderie. I want again extend my heartfelt appreciation for all who attended, for honoring this tradition and sharing your time and talents with us.
Hope to see you all next year. This fall, we will investigate whether there are other alternative corporate meets for our team to attend. If not, then we will probably return to the same meet in Alexandria, Virginia, which will likely be held on June 12 – 13, 2027.
