Meet Recap by Tony Thurman

AT&T won the Mid-Atlantic Corporate Relays this year, defeating Booz Allen by a score of 765 to 592.

The meet, held in the Washington, D.C. area, consisted of most of our usual track and field events, but did not include the road races. We had an excellent turn-out and put in a powerful performance, winning 15 out of 18 team events our team entered, including three compiled events (team jump, team throw, WMA sprint relay). AT&T finished first (by WMA score) in all 6 individual events.

We had team members from Atlanta, California, Chicago, Kansas City, Washington State, Canada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio and the Washington, DC area.

We turned in a dominant sprint performance with gold medal performances (by WMA score) in the men’s and women’s 100M, 200M and 400M events, as well as the 4x100M, 4x400M, Submasters Sprint and Senior’s Relays. Our sprint team consisted of Marcus Shute, Breeanne Martin, Mike Bradecamp, Alfonso Peterson, Archie Glaspy, Jovette Jolicoeur, Joe Hehn, Jacklyn Slaughter and Brendan Putnam.

Our middle distance team, consisting of Jenny Turner, Phil Gibbons, Ken Gibbons, Linda Hanson, Tony Pacheco, Jovette Jolicoeur, Breeanne Martin and Holly Barilla, won the Team Mile, the Team 3000M, Women’s Relay and Master’s Relay and scored valuable points in the Team 800M.

Our throwing team, consisting of Joe Johns, Jovette Jolicoeur, Breeanne Martin and Tony Thurman, won the Shot Put, Discus, Team Throw and finished second in the Thrower’s Relay. Our jumping team with Jovette Jolicoeur, Breeanne Martin, Holly Barilla and Tony Thurman won the High Jump, Long Jump and Team Jump events. The meet results are attached below.

Some noteworthy individual performances included:

In one of the most exciting races, the Submaster’s Sprint, AT&T won the relay by 2.7 seconds thanks to a gutsy 800m leg by Tony Pacheco. In the Master’s Relay, Jenny Turner also had a very exciting 800M leg, closing a 50m gap in the first lap and extending her lead in the second lap.

Jovette Jolicoeur led the medal count with 8 gold medals. Jenny Turner, Mike Bradecamp, Archie Glaspy, Alfonso Peterson, Jacklyn Slaughter and Marcus Shute turned in dominant sprint performances that led to many of our wins.

This meet and our strong performance wouldn’t have been possible without a lot of work behind the scenes by a number of people. I am thankful that Gordon Smith from the Booz Allen team spear-headed the meet and worked the local logistics to secure the venue. I’d like to thank Linda Hanson for organizing the team dinner that was well attended and enjoyed by all and to Mike Bradecamp for getting all our refreshments. Joe’s return this year to help Ken with race time logistics was also greatly appreciated.

As usual, Ken Gibbons did a phenomenal job of scheduling the team in their events and single handedly managing the meet, which is usually the work of three people. He dealt with multiple changes in personnel with athletes who had to cancel and with some last-minute injuries to team members. A significant amount of our success over the years can be attributed his artful crafting of our line-ups to maximize our team points.

I again would like to thank Lou again for leading this team for all these decades and to Ken for mentoring me through season and carrying much of the work load. This was another wonderful weekend of competition and camaraderie. I want again extend my heartfelt appreciation for all who attended, for honoring this tradition and sharing your time and talents with us. Hope to see you all next year.
