Under the blanket of an unusual fog rolling in from the Pacific Ocean, 17 members of the AT&T Running & Fitness Team recently completed the Carlsbad Marathon & Half along with more than 9,000 running enthusiasts. Fourteen competed in the half marathon and three in the marathon. The AT&T team came from eight states and included runners from nine different business units and retirees joining as one team under the AT&T banner. Maribel Fraser, Executive Director IT for Global Business Solutions in San Ramon, CA said “It had been a while since I had participated in any AT&T corporate running events, but running the Carlsbad ½ Marathon reminded me of why I love the sport. The camaraderie, generosity and good will of runners are unmatched. I encourage any current or retired AT&T employee who is a runner or wants to be a runner to join this team. You will have an awesome experience with this running group!”
AT&T defeated GE by a significant margin to win the United States Corporate
Athletics Association (USCAA) Half Marathon Championship for the 3rd year in a
row and finished fifth in the USCAA Marathon Championship behind GE, Booz Allen
Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, and TI. Eight AT&T runners had originally registered
for the marathon but due to the flu, injuries and conflicts, only three were able to
compete. This put the AT&T team at a distinct disadvantage as other teams could
count four runners.
Amy Biggs, AT&T Signature Client Director in Indianapolis had this to say:
"Everything about this event was a great experience! As my first race with the
AT&T Running Team I enjoyed the camaraderie of the pre-race dinner and the
chance to run the race with my teammates. I would encourage anyone who runs half
or full marathons to join us next year in Miami."
Congratulations to all 17 AT&T runners for completing these challenging races.
With scores derived from age and gender versus the world record the top scorer
for the half marathon team was Richard Stotlar from South Boston, VA followed by
Willie Mundt (female) from Supply Chain & Fleet Operations in San Diego, Robert
Vanderlip from San Ramon, CA, Phil Gibbons from Pittsburgh and Phil Torres from
Los Angeles.
James Hill from Austin, TX was our top runner in the marathon. Our other scorers
in the marathon were Amy Biggs from Global Business Solutions in Indianapolis
and Chris Crawford from Dallas.
The next two major events for the team are the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA on April 26 and the USCAA Corporate Cup Relays National Championship in San Ramon, CA on July 13 - 14, 2013. We can enter an unlimited number of runners in the 5K and 10K road races in San Ramon. The team also participates in many local races.
