1998 USCAA Marathon Championships - at HOUSTON
Marathon ---
1/18/1998 - 8am weather (7am): warm, 65
degrees, cloudy,v.humid 95%.
The AT&T team finished 4th this year, up one from
last year when we were 5th. We ran well and were not
far behind Lucent. Actually, if you combine the
Lucent and the AT&T teams, we would have won. The
weather was a factor in our performance again this
year, as the humidity combined with the warm
temperatures affected almost everyone's time. Two of
our women were taken to the medical area after they
finished because of dehydration and exhaustion.
Roger Daniels won not only the Corporate 60+ age
group, but also the 60+ age group for the entire
marathon. Chris Crawford outlasted severe stomach
cramps to be AT&T's first finisher in 2:47:25 with
Dave Mabe competing in his 1st marathon, finishing
only 13 seconds behind Chris."
Special thanks to Tom Zareck for again renting a van
and shuttling team members to and from meals, food
stores, and the airport. THANKS TOM !!
THANKS to BJ Lewis and Debbie Woolman for
coordinating the lodging and other logistics; to Lou
Putnam for all his work for the running program at
AT&T; and to Barb Ganschow and Judy Faherty for
taking pictures for us.
Thanks to all team members for the time and
sacrifice you put in training, preparing for the
race, and actually competing in the race. I think it
is safe to say that most of us pushed ourselves
harder because we were wearing the AT&T singlet.
While our finish time does not reflect the effort,
each of you know that you ran the best race possible
for that day. CONGRATULATIONS!"
Dave Faherty
